Chapter Five

Claudia had been silent all the way to his place. Despite the bouncing and rutted road, one of the nice things about his truck was the fantastic shocks. Worse than her silence was her absolute refusal to look at him. Since he’d closed the door and circled around to get into the driver’s seat, she’d kept her gaze fixed out the window. Her scent wavered between frustration and sadness.

And it was all his fault. He could make all the excuses in the world, but watching her watch Saja and Ryker broke the last bit of the dam around his heart. The professor radiated loneliness. She’d been so maternal toward Saja—or at the very least a big sister. He saw in her all the frustration and worry he’d experienced when Samuel had been driven away. Helpless to prevent any of what he saw unfolding then, and equally helpless tonight.

Tonight, however, had been worse. Claudia may have missed Saja and worried about her, but she hadn’t flown all that way just to see her. She’d wanted to take her home. She wanted her friend back.

The urge to growl rumbled in the back of his throat, but he swallowed the sound. If he did nothing else, he would make the rest of her visit as pleasant as possible. Then he’d get a damn cell tower up and secure the Internet and wire the town so Claudia could email Saja—and Shoshanna—anytime she wanted.

Good Lord, how the hell would he explain Shoshanna’s mating to Samuel? The young woman had taken the news in the truck so well. Sam told her everything on the drive, about wolves, her being his mate, and she’d just agreed with it all. Sure, she’d been surprised, but not repulsed or doubtful. The perfection of their mating—Sam deserved that happiness.

Claudia didn’t deserve a fresh layer of hurt.

“At least it stopped snowing,” she said, her voice distant and filled with inescapable sadness.

“The storm wasn’t heading for us, like it was in Rapid City. They probably got a good three inches.”

“Think the airport will be open tomorrow?”

No, he didn’t want to think about the airport or Claudia getting on a plane. “Maybe. We’ll check before we get you back to the city.”

“Okay.”

The route to his parents’ place was circuitous. Most of the time, it was easier to walk or run to town than it was to drive. He didn’t need the truck, not really, in Los Lobos. But the winding roads took him a fair bit out of Los Lobos then circled back to the homestead. The house was two stories, and, even after a decade of abandonment, it was in better shape than most of the places around. No one had moved in except for a family of raccoons—he’d evicted them his first night back. The second, he’d repaired all the doors and windows. By the end of the first week, he’d fixed the steps inside and out. He’d had to rip the floorboards up in the kitchen and the back sitting room—a broken window had let too many storms in.
